Master of Business Administration (Tourism and Hospitality Management)


Overview

With the coming of the Integrated Resorts (IRs) in Singapore and similar concept sprouting in Asia, a career in the tourism and hospitality industry is certainly looking bright. In Singapore alone, the IRs are expected to create and estimated 10,000 direct jobs and a further 25,000 jobs in the wider economy. A big part of any IR is the related services which have to be driven by professionals processing management know-how which blends with hospitality expertise. Hence, it is vital that a practical and cutting-edge programme is introduces to prepare for this challenge, This Adelaide MBA in Tourism and Hospitality Management will gear you towards world-class management with a touch of the renowned hospitality from the Southern hemisphere. The objective of the Tourism and Hospitality Management MBA is to impart the industry concepts, skills and functions from the management perspective. This involves conceptual learning as well as practical learning. Specifically aimed at working adults and university graduates, the learning process combines the convenience of directed reading, intensive workshops, guest speaker’s seminars, networking and field trips. The programme does not train memory retention. The aim is to provide the participant with a working knowledge of the industry which they would be able to draw upon after graduation.

Accreditation

TIA is accredited by the South Australian Government under the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) which guarantees academic rigour and very high standards. The AQF provides a nationally consistent framework for all qualifications issued by higher education institutions including universities. TIA is based in Adelaide, South Australia.

Course Design and Content

The course covers 12 essentials entrepreneurial knowledge tools in the module shown below conducted in a modular course structure. Each module involves the presentation of a body of knowledge by faculty with substantial entrepreneurial and managerial experience and would be completed in a month. The learning approach uses lecture, video presentations, case studies, group discussions, business games, role plays and directed readings.

  • Entrepreneurship

    The objective of the module is to provide participants with an in-depth knowledge of the concept of entrepreneurship.


  • Strategic Human Resource Management

    The module is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the formal relationship between employer and employee and of the techniques and methods aimed at making the relationship more effective so that organizational goals and objectives are achieved.


  • Leadership and Organisational Behavior

    Participants will be provided with a systematic study of how individuals and groups behave within an organization setting and the impact of leadership on this behavior.


  • Strategic Management

    The aim of the module is to provide the participants with a thorough knowledge of the principles and practice of corporate strategy formulation built around a systematic approach to strategic management.


  • Strategic Marketing

    This module is designed to provide participants with an in-depth knowledge if the marketing concept and the major principles, techniques and theories relating to the strategic practice of marketing.


  • Strategic Legal & Social Issues

    The objective of this module is to provide the participants with an awareness and understanding of the critical legal issues that relate to an organization, thus enhancing the formulation and implementation of strategies for the organization.


  • Strategic Operations Issues

    The aim of this module is to provide participants with an in-depth knowledge of strategic operations issues that are critical for the operations of an organization.


  • Strategic Finance Issues

    The module is designed to prepare participants for effective and efficient planning and management of financial and resource requirements and targets.


    Elective Modules


  • Strategic Hotel Management Issues

    The module examines hotel management issues in the context of international changes and developments that have a bearing on the hospitality and tourism industry.


  • Strategic Resort Management Issues

    The module examines strategic resort management issues in the context of recreational amenities, resort marketing and operations, resort guest activities and the future of resorts in the context of the changing environment.


  • Event Management

    This module introduces to participants the principles, practices and processes of event management including strategic and shareholder issues in event management, project management, marketing and public relations.


  • Tourism Management Project

    In order to reinforce the learning process throughout the programme, all participants shall undertake a tourism management project. Using their knowledge of case study research as a method, participants will have to plan and research a tourism-related issue or subject of their choice.


Delivery Mode

This programme is available on both full-time & part-time mode. The course consists of 12 modules and can be completed in 12 months.

January / April / July / October

Assessment

For each module, participants will complete an assignment and an examination. For the Casino Management Project, the participants will complete an assignment whereby skills gained during the specialised programme will be utilised to undertake hands-on research.

Entry Requirements

For the admission into the 12 module programme, applicants normally have:

  • An acceptable bachelor degree or a relevant professional qualification conducted at a standard equivalent to a bachelor’s degree and access to a workplace or projects which could be the basis of their entrepreneurial assignments and projects.
  • Adequate proficiency in English, for example IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 550. If students do not meet the English requirements, they are required to pass the TIA qualifying test.
  • Applicants not having an acceptable bachelor degree or equivalent do have a pathway to the MBA on a stage-by-stage basis if they successfully complete the 4-module Graduate Certificate in Management, followed by the 4-module Graduate Diploma in Management and finally the 4-module MBA stage of the course.
  • They may enrol in the Graduate Certificate in Management course provided they have: completed a qualification deemed equivalent to an Advanced Diploma under the Australian Qualifications Framework or are able to demonstrate that they have equivalent experience and learning (for example, in the form of ranking or seniority in their organisation) or have specialised professional or technical qualifications or such other qualifications as are deemed acceptable to TIA; at least five years’ significant work experience;
  • Access to a workplace or projects which could be the basis of their assignments and project.
