With the coming of the Integrated Resorts (IRs) in Singapore and similar concepts sprouting in Asia, a career in the tourism and hospitality industry is certainly looking bright. In Singapore alone, the IRs are expected to create an estimated 10,000 direct jobs and a further 25,000 jobs in the wider economy. A big part of any IR is the related services which have to be driven by professionals possessing management know-how which blends with hospitality expertise. Hence, it is vital that a practical and cutting-edge programmed is introduced to prepare for this challenge.
This BBA in Tourism and Hospitality Management with a major project on Casino Management will gear you towards world-class managers and executives with a touch of the renowned hospitality from the Southern hemisphere. The Tourism and Hospitality BBA is a quality course, built on a strong theoretical base with high workplace relevance, and provides participants with the opportunity to develop the critical skills necessary to become effective managers and executives in the tourism, hospitality and casino arenas. The course has been designed to produce graduates with:
- Knowledge of underlying principles and concepts of management in the tourism, hospitality and casino arenas with an emphasis on application;
- Specific problem solving skills to deal with contemporary and emerging business issues;
- The ability to apply the knowledge and techniques learnt to business situations; and
- Essential leadership skills for success in project and managerial positions.
Accreditation
Tourism Institute Australia (TIA) is accredited by the South Australian Government within the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) which guarantees academic rigor and very high standards. The AQF provides a nationally consistent framework for all qualifications issued by higher education institutions including universities. TIA is based in Adelaide, South Australia.
Course Design and Content
The course covers 20 essential modules which provide relevant and up-todate knowledge on various aspects of the tourism and hospitality arenas as shown overleaf. Each module involves the presentation of a body of knowledge by faculty with substantial managerial experience and would be completed in a month.
Modules
Stage 1 Core Modules
Information and Communication This module develops skills in managing conflict and negotiations, facilitation skills with group problem solving and decision-making and the management of effective working relationships.
People I This module provides opportunities to develop skills in managing and developing teams, planning, organising and controlling work to effectively achieve goals and in establishing goals for performance measurement.
Operations I This module involves the development of efficient and effective operations in organisation through customer service, productivity, innovation and change.
Finance I This module provides an understanding of what is required for effective operational and financial performance reporting and budgeting and the importance of optimising financial performance through reducing costs and improving efficiency.
Marketing Principles and Practice The marketing project involves the establishment of operational strategies and tactics to meet the marketing objectives of an organisation.
Entrepreneurship This module enables participants to create environments that foster intrapreneurial, entrepreneurial and innovative cultures in organisations. It provides a tool for analysis of an organisation’s internal and external environments and the use of sound and creative concepts for forecasting possible future organisational and environmental states and associated opportunities and threats.
Stage 2 Core Modules
Leadership Issues Participants are encouraged to develop strategic leadership behaviours through self-awareness and self-management strategies to optimise achievement of goals and manage more effectively in conditions of change. Decision-making strategies that facilitates the taking of difficult decisions by leaders are also addressed in this course.
People II This module covers the recruitment, selection, induction, training and development of staff as well as the development of skills to effectively manage grievances, disputes and workplace issues.
Finance II Participants learn about the identification and application of financial management fundamentals in the operations of organisations. There is a maximising of financial returns to expenditure, and investment in operating and capital assets.
Strategic Management-Principles & Practice The purpose of this module is to develop the strategic thinking skills of participants through preparation of a strategic management project plan for the organisation.
Project Management Participants learn how to analyse and evaluate the advantages and problems with project management and develop effective strategies for its use in their organisation.
Stage 2 Specialisation Modules
Marketing for Tourism and Hospitality This module provides concepts and skills in the establishment of operational strategies and tactics that meet the marketing objectives for hospitality or tourism organizations.
Operations for Tourism and Hospitality This module introduces concepts on the maintenance of operational activities through the effective and efficient management if operations, logistics, cultural diversity, risk and projects, with specific emphasis on the tourism and hospitality industry.
Stage 3 Core Modules
Ethics and Social Responsibility Participants are introduced to the concepts of corporate social responsibility and develop a code of business ethics for implementing in an organisation.
Electronic Commerce The purpose of the module is to enable participants understand how, as a consequence of the emergence of a global electronic marketplace and of business investment in the commercialization of the World Wide Web (WWW), there have been shifts in standard of the World Wide Web (WWW), there have been shifts in standard business practices.
Small Business Management The purpose of this module is to enable participants to identify and employ strategies and actions to effectively manage a small business. This module enables participants to know that challenge of owning and managing a small business, planning and organising a small business, selecting and leading its employees, marketing its goods and services, planning and controlling its finances, and providing present and future security for the business.
Casino Management Project (I & II) In order to reinforce the learning process throughout the programme, all participants shall undertake a casino management project. This capstone module requires participants to develop and initiate on a topic of interest in Casino Management.
Stage 3 Specialisation Modules
Professional Meetings and Event Co-ordination This module provides the concepts and competencies required to be a professional meeting / event co-ordinator. It also analyses the essential services that provide the necessary infrastructure for meetings / events and examines the creative and practical aspects of co-ordinating meetings / events.
Tourism and Hospitality Management Perspectives This module provides participants with an understanding and appreciation of the theory, practice, development and effects of tourism. It also provides foundation knowledge in the area of hospitality management.
Delivery Mode
This programme is available on both full-time & part-time mode. The course consists of
20 modules and can be completed in 24 months.

Assessment
For each module, participants will complete an assignment and an examination. For the Casino Management Project, the participants will complete an assignment whereby skills gained during the specialised programme will be utilised to undertake hands-on research.
Entry Requirements
For admission into Year 1 of the TIA BBA (Tourism and Hospitality Management) programme, applicants normally have:
- At least 2 GCE ‘A’ levels – D grades minimum; or.
- A Diploma from a recognised Polytechnic (or equivalent); or
- A Diploma from ERCI recognised by TIA.
- Applicants satisfying this criteria may be eligible for up to a maximum of four credit exemptions for the TIA BBA; and
- Adequate proficiency in English which can be demonstrated by:
- a score of 525 or better on the TOEFL;
- a score 5.5 or better on the IELTS;
- a credit or better in English in the GCE ‘O’ or ‘A’ levels or equivalent;
- any other evidence of proficiency in English acceptable to the TIA’s Registrar.
- If an applicant does not meet any of the above English requirements, that applicant is required to pass an Admission Test set by TIA. ERCI also offers English language courses.
- Up to a maximum of 9 module exemptions are available for applicants. They would normally have:
- Diploma in Business Administration or any other business discipline from any of the local polytechnics (or equivalent)
