Diploma in Enterprise Development


The need for entrepreneurship qualifications across Asia is becoming increasingly obvious as regional economies are showing sustained robust growth. With this, the increasing liberalization of trade internationally is driving the need for professionals with advanced business skills and knowledge. Currently, neither local nor regional educational providers have the capacity to meet this rising demand for entrepreneurship qualifications, and ERCI aims, in part, to satisfy this demand by delivering quality programmes focused on innovation, entrepreneurship, practical relevance and a passion for excellence.

The DED enables the student to attain the thinking skills, creative ability and technical knowledge needed to become professionals in their chosen field, taking into account the context of their work and the ever changing global environment. Students learn to be flexible and sensitive to the dynamic changes in business trends and the needs of their industry.

A focus is placed on the student’s development of his or her own individual business leadership development. The programme seeks to introduce new ideas and practices as a development from their previous experience or studies. The programme recognises and emphasises the value of the business process from concept through to realisation of practical business solutions, and presentation. This is delivered through lectures, tutorials and students are assessed through research and project work, presentations, written assignments and examinations.

Main Objective of the Course

The Diploma aims to develop creativity, entrepreneurial and analytical skills whether in work functions or the development of businesses. These essential qualities will be demonstrated through a range of topics in which the Innovation Phase of this diploma will cover mainly on corporate venture, the entrepreneurship spirit and resource management. This course has also incorporated a mentoring programme in which local entrepreneurs and senior managers to share their experience with participants. Upon completion of the Diploma in Enterprise Development, participants from private corporations, MNCs or civil service will be equipped with the right knowledge and skills in managing work processes and organisation behaviour effectively as well as exploring new opportunities in current work arena

Course Design & Content

ERCED 101      Principles of Entrepreneurship
This subject will provide a pragmatic understanding of a wide range of analytical skills needed by workers, managers and entrepreneurs in creating successful new ventures or corporate projects. The topics include entrepreneurship, advanced industry and competitor analysis, opportunity search and evaluation, project evaluation, strategic design, capital financing and financial statement analysis.

ERCED 102      Managing the Enterprise
This course explores the processes and functions of management. Students will be given the opportunity to explore traditional and modern management theory and the Planning, Organisation, Leadership and Control (POLC) approach to management. The course will promote an understanding of management from a holistic perspective and will examine local, international and global management practices.

ERCED 103      Funding and the Business Plan
In this subject, you will learn how to assess the capital funding requirements for your business start-up, as well as learn of the avenues, and issues that may arise from raising seed/capital funding for your venture as entrepreneurs. Students will also master the practical techniques, processes and format of strategic business plans creation, specifically the creation of the financial plans and budgets, marketing plans and operational plans and understand how these plans work with each other. ERCED 104      Funding and Investment Management for Entrepreneurs
This subject concerns the fundamental theories, concepts processes of interpreting and developing financial statements for the internal bookkeeping and accounts management of a firm. Building on these fundamental concepts, students are required to develop a deeper understanding on the accounting of long-term assets, liabilities and inventories, as well as develop a grounding in financial statement analysis.

ERCED 105      Marketing for Enterprise
This course will introduce students to key basic concepts in marketing and will focus on critical competitive strategies for generating and meeting customer satisfaction. Additionally, the course will focus on the activities used to implement marketing strategies created to meet customer needs and expectations.

ERCED 106      Venturing Overseas
This course will introduce to students the application of marketing principles to international markets. They learn how to evaluate overseas markets, concepts of international business trading, how to develop export plans and generation of international marketing strategies.

ERCED 107      Legal and Social Issues for Entrepreneurs
This course is designed to provide students with an appreciation and understanding of the impacts of legal and social issues relating to the entrepreneurial arena. Students are exposed to both the legal and social issues that may arise from entrepreneurship operations, so as to ensure ethical operational compliance to the law.

ERCED 108      Managing Business Processes
This course has been developed to promote an understanding of key concepts of quality management as it applies to today’s organisations. Students will be exposed to the different frameworks of studying operations management and production as organisational functions. Topics covered include the survey of forecasting methods, production planning, inventory management, quality management, project management, supply chain management and JIT manufacturing.

Delivery Mode

This programme is available on both full-time and part-time mode. The course consists of 8 modules and can be completed in 9 months.

Assessment

Teaching, learning and assessment processes have been developed to ensure that students experience a variety of methods of learning and assessment. The programme is a combination of lecturers and tutorials and assessments are through, individual assignments, participation presentations, and formal examinations at the end of every subject. Students are expected to display experiential learning. The majority of work within the programme includes lectures, seminars, demonstration workshops, group and individual tutorials.

Admission Requirements

  • Minimum 3 GCE ‘O’ levels credits with a pass in English Language
  • In the absence of equivalent qualifications, mature candidates (18 years and above) with relevant working experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
